Joyful Literacy
Have you heard of the “summer slide”? Unfortunately, it’s not the fun kind of slide you’ll find at a water park or playground. The summer slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn’t in session. Although the summer slide may not affect every student, on average students lose about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading, and younger children are prone to the most learning loss because they are at a crucial stage in their development. What’s more, researchers propose that due to COVID-19 and (intermittent) school closures, as many as 70% of all primary children may have fallen behind by September 2021.
To combat the summer slide and help close the COVID-related gap in reading, the Joyful Literacy Team has created the Family Summer Literacy Boost, a video series designed to support literacy for all young children and their families. Each 20 minute video is full of playful practice activities with important foundational skills, and each video is accompanied by a package of handouts that include instructions, games, and activities for each video topic. Click here for the handouts. To access the video series, please contact Marianne Luteyn at mluteyn@mccs.ca.
